The surface retardation of concrete can create a finish similar to acid etching. There are three primary methods for surface retarder application: coating the retarder onto the formwork, or applying it directly to the freshly poured, unset concrete surface. In all cases, the retarder inhibits the hardening of the concrete surface layer, enabling easy removal through high-pressure water washing or brushing. By using specialized products at varying concentrations, you can accurately control the retardation depth and the final texture depth.
How They Work
Depth Control:Surface retarders are able to penetrate and control the depth of surface retardation (typically 3 mm to 12 mm) without compromising the structural integrity or compressive strength of the rest of the slab.
Reversible Retardation:These chemicals temporarily delay the cement hydration reaction but do not permanently prevent the cement from setting. Eventually, the retarded layer will fully harden to its complete strength.

Common Types and Applications
Horizontal Surfaces: After initial bleeding and evaporation, the liquid or gel compound is sprayed or rolled onto the freshly placed flat surface.
Vertical Surfaces: Before pouring the concrete, a thicker formulation or paper liner is applied to the inner side of the formwork to expose the aggregate on cast walls and precast components.
Etch Depth: Products are available in different grades (typically ranging from a light sand finish to deeper aggregate exposure).

How to Use
Uniform Application: Once surface bleeding has stopped and the water has evaporated, apply the surface retarder evenly by spraying or rolling it onto the fresh concrete.
Curing Time: Allow the base concrete to set (usually 12–24 hours, depending on ambient temperature and product grade).
Washing Off: Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly using a high-pressure washer or hose to remove the unset surface mortar, exposing the decorative aggregate below.
